Our last morning in Port Alice. We finally got to try the new coffee shop. One guy driving by stopped and asked if we knew where it was and we should go so they stay open. This seems to be a common comment to visitors. Foggy Mountain Coffee Shop if anyone is in town. Good coffee, a few little gifts to buy. It seems to be the only gift shop? I finally found a postcard. Then we popped into the Thrift Shop that is only open for a few hours a couple times a week. We bought nothing.
Then we left town but we had lots of time to kill before our 4:05 ferry out of Port McNeill so we stopped at Beaver Lake Trail which is just at the Highway 19 and 30 junction. It has a short interpretive trail. We still managed to get turned around but not for too long.
Then lunch in Port McNeill, Gus's Bar. We both had a blue cheese burger and they were delicious! Lots of blue cheese. And, as it would happen, there was another thrift store across the street! I bought some yarn for hats.
We were well in time for the ferry. We read a bit about the history of Sointula while we waited. It was founded as a commune by Finnish immigants. The commune eventually went bust but the town survived. Actually, we saw a notice of a past resident who died this month at the age of 97. She was the daughter of some of the original Finn founders.
We got to our Airbnb which is a little suite above the Coho-jo cafe just by the ferry terminal. I guess this is an original house from early settlers. We haven't been in the cafe yet but the upstairs is super cute. There is one bedroom and a futon in the living room.
check out that wind sock. Blustery! |
We lugged all of our bags up the old narrow staircase and then went for a walk. We quickly ended up on the beach. There is so much beach glass around so we wandered and picked up glass and pebbles.
